Young artists showcased at VGCC Child Care Center

The Child Care Center at Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus held an Art Show on March 21. Approximately 150 works of art created by 37 artists (who ranged in age from one to five years old) were displayed.

The children used a variety of techniques, including finger painting, watercolors, collages and flowers made with hand-prints and foot-prints, as well as marble painting, in which marbles covered in paint are rolled from side to side on paper, and squirt bottle painting. Also among the featured works were special three-dimensional representations of birdhouses and kites.

The children enjoyed showing off their efforts to family and friends. Meanwhile, attendees were treated to breakfast.

According to Child Care Center manager Denise Gill, visual art is not only “just plain fun,” but is also a vital part of early childhood education, contributing to all aspects of the young child’s development, including problem-solving, fine motor skills and communication. “The art show is a culmination of several weeks spent with the kids doing a variety of creative activities here at school,” Gill said. “The show also serves as a great way for our families to meet and fellowship with one another. The art activities encourage the kids’ creativity, and the show provides them with a great sense of accomplishment and development of self-confidence.”
