Warren Early College students introduced to VGCC Main Campus

A class of Warren Early College High School students became familiar with Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus in Vance County at an Aug. 8 orientation session, as they transition more and more from high school to college courses. The school is based at VGCC’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton, but once students enter their fourth year, they take many courses at the larger Main Campus .

WECHS was, along with Vance County Early College High School, one of VGCC’s first two Early College partnerships with local public school systems. Granville Early College High School and Franklin County Early College High School opened more recently. At all four of VGCC’s early college high schools, students simultaneously complete both a high school diploma and a two-year college degree (or up to two years of college-transferable credit) over a five-year period, tuition-free. This year, the four schools enroll a total of approximately 710 students. The 2012-2013 year marks the first school year when the Vance and Warren programs are fully enrolled. WECHS will graduate its first class in the spring of 2013.

During the orientation session, Dr. Angela Ballentine, the college’s vice president of instruction, welcomed students and talked with them about their plans to go to four-year universities. “The good thing about being here on our Main Campus is that you will be able to learn about and experience the wide range of academic programs that we offer at Vance-Granville,” Ballentine said. “The sky is the limit.”

After hearing from college officials, students took a tour of the campus.
