VGCC’s Owen Completes EMS Management Institute

Randy Owen, coordinator/instructor of Emergency Medical Services Programs at Vance-Granville Community College, recently graduated from the EMS Management Institute at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The institute took Owen to Charlotte for fifteen days over a period of approximately six months (between October 2007 and April 2008). In the 2007-2008 class, Owen was the only one of the 40 graduates who represented a community college.

“We are very proud of Randy and congratulate him on this accomplishment,” VGCC Director of Economic and Workforce Development Garland Elliott said. “He demonstrated a great deal of commitment in completing this program.”

The management institute is a professional development program designed for directors, supervisors, training officers and future leaders in EMS. Topics covered by the institute included leadership, team building, public/media relations, conflict resolution, effective writing skills, budget administration, customer service and ethical/legal issues.

“I highly recommend this excellent program to any local EMS supervisor,” Owen said. A Henderson resident, Owen has worked at VGCC since 2000, and was a part-time instructor from 1991 through 2000. He coordinates Emergency Medical Services training from the basic to the Paramedic level, in addition to continuing education, for professionals throughout the region. Among his many certifications are N.C. EMT-P Level II Instructor, Fire Service Instructor II, N.C. Fire Inspector Level I, and American Heart Association (CPR) Instructor.
