VGCC Women’s Volleyball season ends at conference tournament

The 2012 Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball season ended on Oct. 27 with a loss in the first round of the NJCAA Region X tournament to Wytheville (Va.) Community College. Leading the Vanguards in the tournament match, held at Sandhills Community College, were Veronica Papandrea of Durham, with 12 digs and one assist; Cynthia Kelly of Oxford, with two service aces, eight digs and one kill; and Brittny Shells of Oxford, with two service aces and nine digs.

 

The final two matches of the regular season were losses to Sandhills CC and Wytheville CC on Oct. 17 and Oct. 19, respectively. On Oct. 17, Shells contributed six digs, Papandrea added four more, and Kiara Stump of Franklinton posted four digs and a service ace. On Oct. 19, playing at home, Stump led the team with ten digs, six assists and three service aces. Shells posted eight digs and eight kills. Papandrea added eight digs plus two kills. For Shells, Stump, Kelly, and Chelsey Dean of Oxford, it was likely their last match as VGCC Vanguards. A special recognition ceremony was held before the match at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson to honor the players who would not be returning next season.
