VGCC wins home opener in Women’s Volleyball

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards won their first home women’s volleyball contests of the 2016 season on Sept. 10, improving to 8-0. VGCC hosted a tri-match with Danville (Va.) Community College and Mid-Atlantic Christian University at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson before an enthusiastic crowd of fans.

The first match was a 3-0 victory for the Vanguards over the Lady Knights from DCC. The first set of the match was a dominant 25-17 win for VGCC, while the second and third sets were more competitive, with the home team winning both by a 25-22 margin.

The Vanguards were led by Kiyanna Kearney of Henderson, who had 14 digs and 11 kills, and Jesse Edwards of Henderson, who posted 14 kills, 4 solo blocks and 10 digs. Stormi Abernathy of Yanceyville contributed 20 assists, 5 block assists and 5 kills. Hannah Arneth of Oxford made 10 digs. 

After DCC defeated the Mustangs of MACU, 3-0, in the day’s second match, it was VGCC’s turn to face the squad from the four-year school in Elizabeth City. The Vanguards won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-15, respectively. The Mustangs came back to win the third, 25-19, but VGCC managed to put away the match with a 25-21 victory in set four.

Again leading VGCC to victory were Kearney, with 21 digs and 12 kills; Edwards, with 16 assists, 15 digs and 6 kills; and Abernathy, with 18 digs, 14 assists and 13 kills. Kristen Senter of Franklinton posted 9 digs, 5 service aces and 3 kills.

The Vanguards’ next match is set for Friday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson, when their opponent will be Central Carolina Community College.

On Sept. 30, VGCC hosts Patrick Henry Community College at Aycock for a doubleheader that begins at 5 p.m.
