VGCC Will Ask Counties For Increased Operating, Capital Outlay Funds Next Year

Vance-Granville Community College’s Board of Trustees has approved proposed current expense and capital outlay budget requests for 2002-2003 of the four counties the college serves.

The decision was made at the board’s bi-monthly meeting March 18 in which numerous financial issues were discussed.

The $1.6 million to be requested in the next fiscal year represents a 6.5 percent increase over 2001-2002 allocations from Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin counties.

Additional funding is necessary to accommodate the instructional needs of an expanding student body. Enrollment has grown tremendously over the past two years at Vance-Granville. Enrollment increased 10.9 percent in 2000-2001, and it is up 13.3 percent this school year. That is about 25 percent growth in students when compounded over the two-year period.

The trustees discussed extensively the state budget outlook for the 2002-2003 school year. President Robert A. Miller said state officials have informed VGCC to prepare for a 4-10 percent cut in state funding, which could amount to more than $1.3 million. The loss of this much funding could endanger jobs and programs at the school, he said.

“This is coming at a time when business and industry are turning to the community colleges more and more to re-train their people, and when many people who are being caught in the economic slowdown are returning to school to upgrade their skills and to train for new employment,” Miller said.

CONTRACT RENEWALS

The trustees also approved contract renewals for 2002-2003 FOR 172 full-time professional employees, subject to budget constraints that may occur. These include faculty, staff and administration employees.

Vance-Granville Community College currently employs a total of 280 full-time personnel.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

A two-year academic calendar for the college received approval from the trustees. This calendar covers the instructional periods beginning with Fall Semester 2002 and concluding with summer term 2004.
