VGCC Warren Campus offering criminal justice certificate

Vance-Granville Community College will make the Corrections certificate program available at the college’s Warren County Campus for the first time this fall. Students who qualify will be able to start the program on Aug. 20 and complete all their required courses at the campus, which is located at 210 West Ridgeway Street in Warrenton.

The Corrections certificate is offered as part of the VGCC Criminal Justice program and trains professionals for careers in local, state and federal correctional facilities. The 12-semester-hour certificate consists of four required courses: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Corrections, Counseling, and Community-Based Corrections. Students will learn about the history, major philosophies, components, and current practices of the field of corrections, including inmate control, probation and parole, and other related topics. The credits that students earn also count toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology, should they decide to continue their education.

“We’re excited about adding this certificate to the opportunities available to the citizens of Warren County at this location, so that they don’t have to travel to another VGCC campus,” said George Henderson, the Warren County Campus dean. “The Corrections certificate is ideal not only for an adult who wants to move into a new career in Criminal Justice, but also for someone who already works in the field and who needs a college education to take their career to the next level.”

Prospective students who want to start in August should complete their applications and placement tests in July.
