VGCC Volleyball squad signs players

Vance-Granville Community College recently signed several student-athletes to join the 2014 Vanguards women’s volleyball team.

Rachel Thomas of Bunn, Caitlyn Robins of Creedmoor, Ymani Yancey of Oxford  and Sue Cook of Momeyer in Nash County are all new recruits, while English Abriel Stowe of Franklinton is returning for her second season on the team.

Thomas is a graduate of Bunn High School and is now a second-year student in the Office Administration program at VGCC. She played volleyball through middle school and all four years of high school. While Thomas was an outside hitter for the Bunn Wildcats, the team regularly went to the playoffs and advanced to the state finals one season.

Robins graduated from South Granville High School, where she played defensive specialist, setter and outside hitter for the Vikings. Her volleyball team advanced to the 2A state championship in 2012, and she was also on the all-conference team in 2013-2014 for basketball. Robins is a student in the VGCC Criminal Justice program.

Yancey is a College Transfer student at VGCC and graduated from J.F. Webb High School of Health and Life Sciences. She is an experienced volleyball player and has attended volleyball clinics under the instruction of Coach Ellis Crews.

Cook is restarting her athletic career and is a new student in the Pharmacy Technology program at VGCC.

Stowe is a Franklinton High School graduate who is also enrolled in the college’s Pharmacy Technology program, with plans to study Radiography in the future. As a defensive specialist, Stowe was named the Vanguards’ “Most Improved” team member for 2013.

The VGCC women’s volleyball season begins with an away match on Sept. 6.
