VGCC Vanguards lose narrowly at Mt. Zion

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards men’s basketball team lost its fourth straight game Feb. 9, but head coach Avery Wilson was upbeat after the loss. VGCC faced the highly-touted “national” team of Mt. Zion Christian Academy in Durham. “I think our players were intimidated at first by the size of some of their players, but we played probably our best game this season,” Wilson said.

The result was a 61-58 loss for VGCC, which now has a 7-4 record. Down by 20 at one point, the Vanguards clawed their way back to tie the game toward the end. A VGCC 3-pointer that missed as time expired would have sent the game into overtime.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of the guys even if they had won,” Wilson reflected. “They fought their hearts out, and grew up a lot.”

With 23 points, Henderson resident E.J. Henderson was the top scorer for the Vanguards. Jayson Brown of Raleigh contributed 18 points.

After four straight away games, the Vanguards returned home to play Central Carolina Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at Western Vance High School in Henderson. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
