VGCC Vanguards finish season unbeaten at home

Vance-Granville Community College’s men’s basketball team concluded its first regular season playing other colleges and prep schools with a 110-79 victory at home over Johnston Community College on Feb. 28.

VGCC head coach Avery Wilson said that a large, enthusiastic home crowd was helpful to the Vanguards. “I want to thank the fans for their great support all year,” Wilson said. “They gave us a big lift and helped us finish the season undefeated (9-0) at home.” VGCC played home games at Western Vance High School in Henderson.

Wilson said that Henderson resident E.J. Henderson had another “superb game,” scoring 23 points. He was only one of the five Vanguards in double figures, including Jayson Brown of Raleigh (17), Gianni Jefferson (16) and Antonio Henderson (14), both of Henderson; and Denzell Alston of Warrenton (13).

The VGCC Vanguards finished the regular season with a 12-4 overall record. Next, they will participate in their own version of “March Madness,” a tournament in Durham, March 6-8.
