VGCC Vanguards bring home second straight victory

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards defeated the Tidewater Community College Storm on Saturday, Jan. 31, marking the team’s first winning streak of the 2014-15 men’s basketball campaign, as well as their second consecutive conference win.

Coming off a win at home over Guilford Technical Community College, the Vanguards traveled to Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Va., to take on the Storm, who had beaten VGCC, 79-75, in Henderson in the first game of the season.

A close first half ended with VGCC ahead, 37-32. After the break, the Vanguards managed to hold off an attempted comeback by the Storm and edged out the home team, 74-72.

The Vanguards won with a balanced offense, with five players scoring in double figures. Just as in the Guilford Tech game, Tyrek Beverly of Oxford and Khadier Fulcher of Stem were the leaders, with 13 points each. Keyante Lindsey of Stem was not far behind, scoring 12 points. Raekwon Hall of Raleigh and Rodney Kirby of Burlington both contributed 10 points.

Fulcher also had the most rebounds (eight) and steals (nine) for the Vanguards. Hall and Jarrett Ballard of Henderson both made six assists.

Overall, the team shot 59.1% from the floor — a higher percentage than in any of VGCC’s previous victories this season.

The Vanguards are back home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, hosting Patrick Henry Community College at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
