VGCC Trustees Approve Increased Requests From Counties For 2003-2004 Operating Funds

TheVance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to request increased current expense funding and hold the line on its capital outlay requests for the upcoming 2003-2004 fiscal year.

The vote took place Monday, March 17, at the trustees’ bi-monthly meeting.

A total of $1,780,942 will be requested of Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties for next fiscal year. Of that, $1,598,778 will be asked for current, or operating, expenses. This represents an 8.58 percent increase over current fiscal year current expense funds.

The capital outlay, or physical improvements, request of $182,164 is actually $3,475 less than last year’s capital request.

Trustee T.W. Ellis Jr. commented that a large reason for the current expense increase is that operating costs have gone up. “One of the main reasons for that is there will be 27.9 percent more area to maintain with the addition of the new three-story, 52,000 square-foot building under construction on the main campus,” Ellis said.

Re-Accreditation Update

Roxanne Fleming, director of Institutional Effectiveness for the college, reported to the trustees on the visit to Vance-Granville by a team from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The team will review VGCC’s policies and procedures as part of the reaccreditation process.

The visitors will include community college officials from schools throughout the nation. To prepare for their visit, VGCC faculty and staff have completed a self-study and have turned the results of that study over to the SACS team leader.

The importance of gaining re-accreditation includes qualifying for federal funding, and it confirms the validity of the institution to its students and the community, Fleming said.

Construction On Schedule

Building Committee Chairman J. David Brooks reported that, despite the harsh winter weather, construction on the VGCC main campus is moving along nicely. The 52,000 square-foot classroom building is within a week of being on schedule, its roof is being installed and should be completed by April, and the contractors estimate the building is 39 percent complete.

Vance-Granville plans to move into the new building by October 2003.

The 900 square-foot addition to the campus bookstore is almost complete, and renovation has begun on the existing store. That renovation should be done in 5-6 weeks, Brooks said.

Plans for construction of a new classroom building at VGCC’s Warren County Campus and expansion of the Student Services building on the main campus will go to the State Construction Office on March 28 for review.

Higher Education Facilities bonds approved by state voters in 2000 are funding all this new construction, expansion and renovation.

Retirements, New Faculty

The trustees approved the retirement requests, effective June 1, for two VGCC instructors. Marie H. Murdock, program head/instructor of Early Childhood Education, will retire with 28 years service at VGCC, and Frances L. Brewer, coordinator/instructor of Developmental Math, will retire after 21 years. The trustees also approved the resignation of Janice M. Stevens, an English instructor.

Two new instructors of basic skills/GED were also approved for employment. Sandra F. Eaton of Durham and Judy Robinson of Louisburg are both moving to full-time from part-time employment by the college.
