VGCC to hold Benefit Golf Tournament on May 15

Last year, the annual golf tournament to benefit the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund raised approximately $28,000 to provide scholarships to deserving students. This year, college officials hope to surpass that result with the 23rd annual tournament, which will be held at the Henderson Country Club on Tuesday, May 15. “We invite any golfer to join us for an event that is a lot of fun, but which is also very meaningful, because of the worthy cause we are playing for,” said Robert Hubbard of Vance County, the vice-chairman of the board for the college’s endowment fund.Interest earned on the Endowment Fund has provided more than 5,000 scholarships to VGCC students since 1982. Scholarships have been established by industries, businesses, individuals, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff. In Fall 2006, Vance-Granville awarded scholarships to a record 307 full-time students and to 125 students who are enrolled on a part-time basis. Each year, the tournament attracts some 300 of the area’s business and community leaders for a day of recreation, food, and prizes. Morning and afternoon rounds will begin with shotgun starts, at 8:30 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m.The format is four-person “Super Ball.” Golfers can form their own teams of four, or sign up and be put on a team. Teams will be handicapped based on handicaps supplied by each player.Trophies will be awarded for first through third place teams in both rounds. Other prizes will be given for closest to the pin and longest drive. Golfers will be entered into drawings for a cash prize of $300 and other prizes.A light breakfast, a boxed lunch, and dinner (immediately following the afternoon round) will be served in the Henderson Country Club clubhouse. There is a $20 dinner charge for those who do not play golf. The cost for one golfer to enter the tournament is a $150 tax-deductible donation per round. That fee includes greens fees, cart, meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), gift bag, and practice balls.Businesses and individuals can also take advantage of sponsorship opportunities at various levels. Businesses may also donate products or premium items with the company’s logo on them to be placed in golfers’ gift bags, or to be given as door prize drawings. To register for the tournament, visit the college’s main campus in Vance County or call (252) 738-3409. Registration and sponsorship forms are also available on the college website (vgcc.springerstudios.net/golf.htm).
