VGCC to hold 30th Benefit Golf Tournament on May 6

Golfers on the green at Henderson Country Club

The 30th annual Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament will be held at the Henderson Country Club on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. All event proceeds support the mission of the college, the Endowment Fund and student scholarships.

The milestone for the fundraiser comes as the college prepares to celebrate its 45th anniversary. “In almost three decades, thanks to the support of numerous golfers and sponsors, our tournament has grown to include both morning and afternoon rounds as well as meals,” said Bob Hubbard of Henderson, the vice-chairman of the VGCC Endowment Fund board and chairman of the golf tournament committee. “We have raised more than $400,000 through these tournaments, strengthening partnerships between the college and the community while supporting both our students and our economic future.” The 2013 tournament alone generated a record-high $35,420 from entry fees and from sponsors. “Not only is this event meaningful, but it’s also a lot of fun, with great people, great food and great door prizes,” added Hubbard, who has been involved with the tournament each year since its inception in 1985.

This year’s morning and afternoon rounds will begin with shotgun starts, at 9 a.m. and at 1 p.m. The format is four-person “Captain’s Choice Super Ball.”Golfers can form their own teams of four, or sign up and be put on a team. Teams will be handicapped based on handicaps supplied by each player.Trophies will be awarded for first through third place teams in both rounds. Other prizes will be given for “closest to the pin” and “longest drive.”A particular hole-in-one will be rewarded with a new car, courtesy of Charles Boyd Chevrolet-Cadillac-Buick-GMC, Inc.There will also be a “50/50 Putting Contest” on the 18th green. The golfer who makes the putt, or comes closest, will win half of the accumulated $5 entry fees for that contest. A new feature this year is the “Beat the Pro” contest, in which players can choose to challenge the HCC golf pro, John Michael, to see who can hit the ball closest to the pin on a certain par-3 hole. A player who beats the pro will receive additional tickets in a raffle to win the “grand” door prize later in the evening.

The cost for one golfer to enter the tournament is a $150 for the afternoon round, or $125 for the morning round. In either round, that fee includes greens fees, cart, meals, gift bag, and practice balls.

A light breakfast, lunch, and dinner (immediately following the afternoon round) will be served in the HCC clubhouse. A silent auction and door prize drawings will be held in conjunction with dinner.

Businesses and individuals can take advantage of sponsorship opportunities at various levels. Businesses may also donate products or premium items featuring the company’s logo to be placed in golfers’ gift bags, or to be given as door prizes.
