VGCC Students raise funds for Haiti

Vance-Granville Community College’s History Club recently completed a fundraiser in response to the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January. On Feb. 12, just before Valentine’s Day, club members sold “sweetheart” bags of candy and other treats at locations on the college’s main campus in Vance County. To the students’ pleasant surprise, they sold every one of the bags they had prepared. Proceeds from those sales and other contributions from college faculty, staff and students amounted to over $200 for the Haitian earthquake victims. In March, the club sent the funds to Doctors without Borders, the international humanitarian organization that has been one of the key relief agencies in Haiti. “I’m very proud of our group for how well we did on this project,” said Courtney Hardee of Wake Forest, a student in the College Transfer program who serves as president of the club. “We were all glad to do our part to give as much help as we could to the people of Haiti.” Meanwhile, VGCC students, faculty and staff are continuing to show interest in supporting Haitian earthquake victims. A “Walk-a-thon” fundraiser is scheduled at the college on April 22, with proceeds to be donated to the World Food Programme.

Membership in the VGCC History Club is open to any curriculum student interested in expanding their classroom knowledge of history and enjoying cultural experiences. For more information, contact instructor Josh McKaughan, the club’s advisor, at (252) 738-3464.
