VGCC Students Make Donation to American Cancer Society

The Vance-Granville Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently presented a donation of $445 to the American Cancer Society. Above, VGCC student and Phi Theta Kappa chapter president Patricia Eberbach (second from right) presents a check to Bryan Renn of Oxford (third from left), community manager for the American Cancer Society. They were joined at the gazebo on VGCC’s main campus by, from left, PTK chapter vice-president Rebecca Dangora, VGCC instructor and chapter advisor Philip Mondou and PTK member Tina Owens (right).According to Eberbach, the chapter raised the funds in 2006 and 2007 through bake sales and catalog sales. She expressed hope that chapter officers in the future would raise even more funds for cancer research.Renn, who works for ACS in an area that includes Person, Granville, Vance and Warren counties, thanked the PTK members for their donation. He noted that cancer research is not possible without contributions such as this, and that much of that cutting-edge research is being done in North Carolina.Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. All full-time students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in associate degree curriculum programs, and part-time students have a minimum 3.75 GPA. They all must have completed 12 credit hours toward their degrees. Mondou and VGCC Academic Skills Center coordinator Evelyn Hall are the faculty advisors for the student organization, officially known as the Alpha Sigma Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.
