VGCC Students Awarded full Scholarships to ETSU

Vance-Granville Community College students Noah K. Wall of Oxford (pictured above, right) and Amber B. Adcock of Creedmoor (above, left) have both received the Midway Honors Scholars Program scholarship from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, where they will start classes this August. The scholarship will pay for all of their tuition and fees, and is specifically designed for outstanding students transferring from a two-year college. Wall and Adcock were both enrolled in VGCC’s College Transfer program.

“I enjoyed the College Transfer program so much,” Wall said. “I feel like I might have had a better experience than heading off to a university right away, because I was able to transition into college at VGCC. I had the work-load of college, but I was still at home, so I didn’t have the added stress of moving away.”

Wall is planning on majoring in Communications at ETSU, and Adcock is undecided on a major. The longtime best friends and South Granville High School graduates play together in a band (Wall on fiddle, Adcock on bass), and were attracted to ETSU by its unique minor in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music. They performed on stage at the annual VGCC Cultural Fair in 2007 and 2008.

The two have also been recipients of endowed scholarships at VGCC. Wall received the Kayser-Roth Corp./Creedmoor Distribution Center Presidential Merit Award and the Granville Industrial & Business Club scholarship, while Adcock received the Air Control Inc. Presidential Merit Award. Both also made the Dean’s List during their time at VGCC.

The VGCC College Transfer Program provides students with the first two years of a B.A. or B.S. degree program, including over 80 transferable freshmen and sophomore level courses. Transfer courses are available on all four VGCC campuses and online. Statistics have shown that VGCC students who transfer typically do well and often outperform students who began at the university as freshmen.
