VGCC Student recognized for Academic Excellence

Vance-Granville Community College has named student Rebecca L. “Becky” Anderson of Henderson as its recipient of the North Carolina Community College System ’s Academic Excellence Award for 2014. One student from each of the 58 colleges in the state system is honored with the award each year. Anderson will be officially recognized at Commencement in May, when she is also scheduled to graduate with an Associate in Science degree .

Anderson enrolled in the College Transfer program at VGCC to earn the first two years of a four-year degree. She has been named to the Dean’s List more than once and has received endowed VGCC scholarships because of her academic success. She is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the Spanish Club. “I have worked diligently, and in return, Vance-Granville has provided me with an education that will prepare me for the rest of my life,” Anderson said. After graduating from VGCC, she intends to complete a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Drury University in Missouri, and later a master’s degree in the same field.

Outside of class, Anderson is also a student-athlete as a member of the VGCC Golf team. In her first season, she won first place among women at the 2013 Hurricane Fusillade Challenge Championship hosted by Louisburg College, placed sixth in the Region X Championship and qualified for the NJCAA Women’s Golf National Championship , in which she finished in the top half among individual golfers from across the country. “This was an honor, because I was the first women’s golfer at VGCC to represent our school at a national level,” Anderson said. “I hope that this season I will be able to compete in the 2014 nationals and represent VGCC again.”

“Becky has excelled both academically and athletically, and we are proud to recognize her among the top students in North Carolina,” said Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of VGCC. “She has made the most of her time as a Vanguard, and we know she will continue to succeed at the university level and in her career.”
