VGCC Student Excels in Drive To Achieve His Career Goal

Larry Holt of Creedmoor, Vance-Granville Community College’s Applied Technologies Student of the Semester for Spring 2006, has a good job that he likes. However, he has a career goal in mind and has turned to VGCC to help him reach that goal.

The Hillsborough native works as a tractor-trailer delivery driver for a brewery company in Durham. And while he says he feels comfortable in this job, his heart was pulling me in another direction. “I’ve always liked to work with my hands so it should be no surprise that I enrolled in the Carpentry program at Vance-Granville Community College,” Holt said.

In addition to his full-time job, Holt works part-time with a builder in Hillsborough and says this is great experience. Along with the knowledge he is graining from the VGCC program, he says he knows he has a bright future when he forms his own construction company in the future.

Holt is enrolled in evening classes at Vance-Granville, and the evening Carpentry program takes two years to complete. He praises the knowledge and experience he is gaining at VGCC and the instruction he is receiving from the program’s evening instructor, Reuben Palmer.

Getting up at 4 a.m. to go to his day job and taking classes in evenings does not leave much time for Holt’s family. But he expressed his thanks to his wife, Mechi, owner of Diva Style Boutique in Creedmoor, and to his son, Tray, a student at Christian Faith Academy in Creedmoor. “My family is everything to me, and I’m truly thankful for their support in my decision to go back to school,” Holt said.

The evening instructor, Reuben Palmer, and James H. Wheeler Jr., dean of Applied Technologies at VGCC, see a very bright future for Larry Holt. “With his strong work ethic and the support of his family, he has taken the steps necessary to reach his goals and be successful,” Wheeler said.

Carpentry is one of eight Applied Technologies programs offered at Vance-Granville Community College, both in day classes and in the evening. For more information about any of these programs, contact Herbert Washington, counselor, at (252) 738-3228.
