VGCC schedules workshop for Afterschool professionals

Vance-Granville Community College is offering a continuing education opportunity for local afterschool care program administrators and staff members.

Upping Your Afterschool Game,” a one-day (six-hour) North Carolina Afterschool Professional Development Competency Training session, is scheduled to be held in Room 7239 on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County on Saturday, May 9. The workshop lasts from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

VGCC School-Age Education Program Head/Instructor Jacquelin Heath will be the presenter. Heath, who holds a master’s degree in education from North Carolina A&T State University, is currently VGCC’s longest-serving full-time faculty member. The college offers an Associate in Applied Science degree and a diploma in School-Age Education, as well as a School-Age Care certificate.

“Upping Your Afterschool Game” was developed by the N.C. Center for Afterschool Programs and the N.C. Afterschool Professional Development Work Group, which includes the N.C. Community College System. This training focuses on eight content areas that provide a framework of the knowledge and skills needed for professional development in the field of afterschool care. These core competencies are based on research and categorized according to five levels of skills necessary to provide quality programming. Participants will have the chance to identify additional strategies, skills and resources to support their work with school-age populations that reflect relevant issues and challenges. The training aims to help both new and experienced afterschool administrators and staff members to apply the competencies to strengthen their organizations. Subjects to be covered will include the characteristics of effective leaders; starting and funding afterschool programs; hiring and training staff; and working with volunteers. Participants who successfully complete the training will be awarded 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU).

The total fee for the workshop is $25. Registration can be completed online at vgcc.springerstudios.net/ped . The deadline to register is May 2.
