An English As A Second Language (ESL) class has begun at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus, and a Spanish for Healthcare Professionals class will begin there soon.

ESL classes are for non-English speaking people who need help understanding basic English language. This may include how to apply for jobs, how to communicate with merchants, healthcare providers and other officials, and other “survival” English.

The classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the campus on N.C. 56 west of Louisburg, and they are free. Although they began April 4, persons can still enroll.

A 10-week Spanish for Healthcare Professionals course is planned to begin April 22 and be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Amy Calamaco will be the instructor.

This course will help prepare those who work in hospitals, doctors’ offices and clinics communicate with Hispanic patients. A great deal of the course includes medical terminology, which must be communicated to Hispanic patients.

Registration cost of this course is $60, plus there will be a $16 cost for the textbook. For more information or to pre-register, call the Franklin County Campus at 496-1567.
