VGCC Remains Unbeaten with Win over Carolina Prep

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team continued its winning ways at home Nov. 16 by defeating the Carolina Prep Falcons 92-76 at Western Vance High School in Henderson. The VGCC Vanguards were originally scheduled to play the Virginia Heat that night, but when that team was unable to make the trip, the Falcons stepped in.

Just as in their 86-73 victory over Roanoke-Chowan Community College two nights earlier, the Vanguards (now 4-0) faced a tough opponent and the lead went back and forth. Also reminiscent of the earlier game, VGCC made a second-half comeback. Avery Wilson of Louisburg, the VGCC head coach, credited the success to switching to a zone defense in the second half, which effectively stifled the Falcons’ offense.

With 26 points, Henderson resident E.J. Henderson was the Vanguards’ leading scorer. He was followed closely by Jayson Brown of Raleigh, who scored 25. Rodney Alexander of Warrenton contributed 14 points. Coach Wilson also applauded the floor game of point guard Brandon Jones of Durham, who put up 2 points and 15 assists.

Having played four games in 13 days, the VGCC squad will take a two-week breather, followed by another home game at Western Vance High School on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. versus Bonner Academy. There is no charge for admission.
