VGCC recognizes Nursing graduates and faculty

Members of Vance-Granville Community College’s Practical Nursing class of 2010 achieved a significant milestone when 100 percent of the graduates who took the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) passed on their first attempt. The NCLEX-PN is the nationally recognized test that the North Carolina Board of Nursing uses to measure competence for entry-level practice for graduates of Board-approved nursing education programs so that they may begin working as licensed practical nurses.

Gwendolyn Hackney, VGCC’s Director of Nursing, announced that outstanding result at a meeting of Nursing faculty and students on Jan. 5, and said that it set a high standard for current students to match. She also took the opportunity to applaud the instructors who taught those students. “Our 29 graduates are to be commended for their excellent accomplishments, but I think they would agree that they did not get to that point all on their own,” Hackney said. “They had their outstanding Vance-Granville faculty there to instruct them, encourage them, and push them toward success. I want to thank and congratulate these educators for a job well done.” Hackney presented “certificates of recognition for excellence in nursing education” to the five Practical Nursing faculty members: Gail Medlin (who also serves as coordinator for the PN program), Francine Davis, Jenny Holloway, Kathy Bray and Donna Compton.

Medlin, a resident of Oxford, graduated with a BSN from UNC-Chapel Hill and has taught at VGCC since 2004. Davis, who lives in Creedmoor, earned a BSN and a master’s in public health from UNC-Chapel Hill and has been employed by VGCC since 2000. Holloway, a Creedmoor resident, graduated with a BSN from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and has worked at VGCC since 2008. Compton, a resident of Virgilina, graduated from Old Dominion School of Nursing with a BSN and has worked at VGCC since 2003. Bray, a resident of Bracey, Virginia, graduated from Old Dominion School of Nursing with an MSN and has worked at VGCC since 2002. All are registered nurses.

VGCC offers the three-semester Practical Nursing diploma program , as well as the five-semester Associate Degree Nursing program and a three-semester LPN-to-ADN transition program.
