VGCC Radiography program celebrates student success

Vance-Granville Community College president Randy Parker recently congratulated the college’s Radiography program on a significant achievement. The 2007 graduating class had a 100 percent passing rate on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists’ national examination. “We commend our Radiography students on their hard work and thank their instructors for their support and leadership,” Parker said. VGCC Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Ray Goldberg pointed out that the Radiography program has a tradition of success, with exam passing rates consistently above 90 percent.

“I attribute this success to the efforts of a hard-working, caring staff as well as the desire of the students to succeed,” said Angela Thomas, head of VGCC’s Radiography program. Other full-time faculty members include Jennifer Johnson, Estelle Alston and Linda Faulk.

“The Radiography program faculty is an amazing group of young ladies,” Dr. Angela Ballentine, VGCC’s Vice President of Instruction, noted. “They go beyond the call of duty not only to meet the needs of the students, but to stay on the cutting edge of technology, impart knowledge and share their expertise. I appreciate their endless efforts to make the Radiography program a success, and I salute the graduating class of 2007. As the former Dean of Health Sciences, and having worked closely with the members of this class of 2007, I am truly proud of them.”

Vance-Granville’s Radiography curriculum, which is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, prepares the graduate to be a radiographer. Several area hospitals are used for hands-on clinical experience, including Maria Parham Medical Center, Granville Medical Center, Durham Regional Hospital and Franklin Regional Medical Center. Today, radiography encompasses many specialty areas, including radiation therapy, ultrasound, mammography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). VGCC recently began offering a CT/MRI program for graduates of Radiography programs at its Franklin County Campus.

Thomas said that seven of her Radiography students who graduated in 2007 continued on in the CT program, which is offered by Edgecombe Community College in partnership with VGCC. All seven have now graduated from the CT portion and now are enrolled in the MRI portion.
