VGCC Presidential Search underway

The search for the next president of Vance-Granville Community College formally started on July 11, when members of the college’s Board of Trustees and its Presidential Search Committee approved application procedures and a list of qualifications and ideal characteristics they would like to see in the institution’s next leader. This “presidential profile” and other information can be found on the new VGCC Presidential Search Web site at vgcc.springerstudios.net/presidentialsearch .

Dr. Randy Parker, the current president of VGCC, announced in May that he would be leaving the college on Aug. 31 to accept the presidency of Guilford Technical Community College.

The Board’s action on July 11 followed a forum earlier in the day, during which VGCC faculty and staff members had the chance to give trustees their input on traits that they considered important in a leader. The meeting was facilitated by North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees executive director Dr. Donny Hunter, who is assisting VGCC with the search.

Sara C. Wester of Henderson has been appointed to serve as chairperson of the VGCC Presidential Search Committee. Wester, the retired manager of the Henderson office of the N.C. Employment Security Commission, has served on the Board of Trustees since 2004. Other members of the search committee are trustees Deborah Brown, L. Opie Frazier, Jr. and Abdul Sm Rasheed, all of Henderson, John K. Nelms of Oxford, Ernest Thompson of Butner, and (ex-officio) the chairman of the Board of Trustees, Donald Seifert, Sr. of Henderson. Frazier chaired the search committee that ultimately recommended the hiring of President Parker in 2004.

“Finding a chief executive officer for an institution as complex as VGCC is a tremendous responsibility, which we as a committee take seriously,” Wester said. “We are now starting the process of advertising the position throughout the nation. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates who want to build on our college’s tradition of excellence and lead us into the future with innovation and creativity.” The deadline for applications is Aug. 15, 2011.
