VGCC Offers Twelve Classes during Mini-Semester

Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled 12 mini-semester classes during Fall Semester, including five that will be offered online and one that will be a “hybrid” course, in which students attend classes but also complete some course work online. Mini-semester classes are classes that are held within a semester, but do not last the entire 16 weeks of the semester. Usually they are half that length, but students attend on-campus classes twice as long to get the same number of contact hours. This fall’s second mini-semester classes will begin on Oct. 17, and will conclude on Dec. 12.

Marsha Nelson, VGCC’s Vice President of Instruction, said that mini-semester classes are offered so that students will be able to take classes that were filled when they registered at the beginning of the semester. They can help students get prerequisites out of the way and have proven very popular since the first mini-semester courses were offered in 1999, Nelson added. Online mini-semester classes are more attractive to working people, stay-at-home mothers and others who like the convenience of working in their own homes and getting college credit.

Fall mini-semester classes being offered online are Business Math ( BUS 121 -M92), Introduction to Computers ( CIS 110 -M92), Community-Based Corrections ( CJC 241 -M92), American Government ( POL 120 -M92) and Internet/Web Fundamentals ( WEB 110 -M92).

The hybrid course, Early Childhood Administration II ( EDU 262 -M92), will require students to meet on the main campus in Vance County on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 until 1:20 p.m.

Six on-campus classes complete the fall mini-semester lineup at VGCC. Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers ( ELC 128 -M2) will be taught on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the college’s main campus in Vance County. Franklin Campus in Louisburg will be the site for Introduction to Business ( BUS 110 -M8) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Basic Personal Computer Literacy ( CIS 111 -M8) on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Two daytime classes, Substance Abuse Overview ( SAB 110 -M4) and Substance Abuse Issues in Client Services ( SAB 240 -M4) will be taught on South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor. Warren Campus in Warrenton will offer a Keyboarding class ( OST 131 -M6) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
