VGCC offers Summer employment and training to youth and adults

The recently-enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the “stimulus package,” will soon have a local impact through Vance-Granville Community College’s Workforce Investment Act program. The Kerr-Tar Workforce Development Board, which administers federal Workforce Investment Act funds, recently received federal recovery funds, which will be used by its various WIA operators, including VGCC, to train future workers.

Some of the “stimulus” funds will be used to place youth ages 16-24 in local jobs this summer. VGCC is recruiting young people ages 16-24 who live in Vance or Franklin counties, as well as older youth (ages 19-24) who live in Granville County. “The focus for this program will be on the youth that are most in need of these services, such as out of school youth and those at risk of dropping out, and there will be income eligibility requirements,” Jones said. Work sites will include local schools, medical facilities, county and city offices, as well as the community college. Youth will work approximately 32 hours per week for eight weeks. They will spend four hours each week in a classroom setting, where they will learn work readiness skills and how to make successful career decisions. All participants will be eligible to receive a Career Readiness Certificate through the VGCC Human Resources Development program. Interest meetings for youth will be held Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the small auditorium in Building 2 on VGCC’s main campus , and on Wednesday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room on VGCC’s Franklin County Campus . All interested youth, as well as their parents or guardians, are encouraged to attend.

The WIA program will also offer special short-term work experiences for adults living in Franklin, Vance, Granville and Warren counties. These adults will be paid hourly wages for participating in work experiences with local employers, including state and county government offices. This work experience will provide training to unemployed and under-employed adults, who are at least 22 years old. VGCC will also make training available to the adults, in career areas including, but not limited to, Nursing Assistant, Basic Law Enforcement, Medication Aide and Phlebotomy. Meetings for adults who are interested in working this summer will be held on Tuesday, May 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the small auditorium in Building 2 on VGCC’s main campus , and Wednesday, May 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room on VGCC’s Franklin County Campus .

Anyone interested in participating in the program should bring with them a photo I.D., Social Security card, birth certificate, verification of residence/address, a statement of their income for the past six months (or for their parents, if they are under 18 years old). For more information about these opportunities, call the VGCC Workforce Investment Act office at (252) 738-3218 or 738-3297.
