VGCC Offers Nine Fall Mini-Semester Classes

Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled nine mini-semester classes to start in October, including three that will be offered online and two that will be “hybrid” courses, in which students attend classes but also complete some course work online. Mini-semester classes are classes that are held within a semester, but do not last the entire 16 weeks of the semester. If the term is half that length, for example, students attend each on-campus class twice as long to get the same number of contact hours. This fall, classes held during the second eight weeks of the semester will begin on Oct. 16 and end on Dec. 14. Registration for students interested in these mini-semester classes will be held on Monday, Oct. 15.

Dr. Angela Ballentine, VGCC’s Vice President of Instruction, said that mini-semester classes are offered so that students will be able to take classes that were filled when they registered at the beginning of the semester. They can also help students get prerequisites out of the way. Online mini-semester classes have proven to be attractive to working people, stay-at-home mothers and others who like the convenience of working in their own homes and getting college credit.

Introduction to Computers ( CIS 110 ), Child, Family & Community ( EDU 131 ) and Internet/Web Fundamentals ( WEB 110 ) will be offered online, while two Education classes — Infants, Toddlers & Twos ( EDU 234 ) and Early Childhood Administration II ( EDU 262 ) will be hybrid courses. Infants, Toddlers & Twos will require students to meet in room 6116 on the main campus in Vance County on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 10:20 a.m., while Early Childhood Administration II will meet in the same room on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon until 1:20 p.m. Students interested in Education courses should contact Jennifer M. Johnson at (252) 738-3408 for further details.

Mini-semester classes on the main campus will include HVAC Controls ( AHR 130 ) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as two sections of Manicure/Nail Technology II ( COS 222 ) — both of which are offered Monday through Thursday.

In addition, Co-op Work Experience I ( COE 111 ) is offered during the mini-semester. Co-op, or Cooperative education, is an academic program that combines classroom studies with on-the-job, career-related work experience. A Co-Op student gets relevant, resume-building work experience through an employer, while at the same time, he or she earns course credit toward a degree.

For more information or to apply for fall mini-semester classes, interested persons may visit the campus on which they are being offered or call VGCC at (252) 492-2061.
