VGCC offers Medical Coding program on Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer the Medical Coding certificate program on its main campus in Vance County this fall. Medical Coding is a thirteen-month program that includes training in coding, billing, insurance, medical terminology, and preparing for a certification test.

Three options are available for students interested in Medical Coding.

Starting Oct. 8, a day class will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Orientation for the day class will be held on Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. in room 7107 of Building 7.

An evening Medical Coding class will also be offered, starting Oct. 9, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Orientation for this night class will be held on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in room 7107 of Building 7.

The course will also be offered online, starting Oct. 8. Students taking the Medical Coding program online will need to attend orientation on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in room 7107 of Building 7.

Attendance is mandatory for all students at an orientation/registration session, at which they will be given a complete program overview and instructions.

Medical coding is the process of taking written medical records and converting them into a numerical language in order to submit a bill for services or supplies to an insurance company for payment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “The medical coding field is expected to grow much faster than the average occupation through the next decade.” VGCC’s program provides area residents with the necessary skills and understanding to allow them to seek entry-level coding positions in one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations.

Students must have a high school diploma or GED to enter the program. The cost of either the day, night or online program is a $60 registration fee plus the cost of a textbook.
