VGCC offers Disaster Preparedness seminar for Small Businesses

Vance-Granville Community College’s Small Business Center will present a free seminar on disaster preparedness, called “Ready Business,” on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Room 401 at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg.

Rachel Monteverdi, a Family and Consumer Sciences agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension office in Franklin County, will serve as instructor for the seminar.

Monteverdi will provide information on how preparing for a disaster can save a small business, lives, merchandise and money. Small business owners who complete the seminar will understand the need for, and the key concepts of, business continuity and disaster preparedness planning, discover their disaster risks, and begin writing their individual disaster plans for their businesses.

“Whether by fire, flood, winter storm, cyber-attack, tornado, hurricane or some other disaster, businesses can be ruined overnight,” Monteverdi said. “Research shows that 40 to 60 percent of all businesses that close after a disaster will ultimately fail. ‘Ready Business’ helps businesses plan to stay in business in the event of a disaster.”

The seminar is presented by the Small Business Center in partnership with the Extension Disaster Education Network, N.C. State University, Franklin County Emergency Management and other government agencies.

This seminar is limited to 25 attendees. Lunch will be provided. For more information and to reserve a seat in this free seminar, call Tanya Weary at (252) 738-3240 or e-mail her at smallbusiness@vgcc.edu .
