VGCC offers Cosmetology during evening at South Campus

This fall, Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus will offer Cosmetology courses during the evening, making it the only one of the college’s four campuses with such a schedule. In addition, the community colleges in Durham and Wake counties do not offer Cosmetology at night, either, making the program even more unique for the area, according to VGCC Cosmetology program head Tomeka Moss. South Campus is located on N.C. 56 between Butner and Creedmoor.

“At South Campus, we offer the Cosmetology program not only during the day but also at night, which is designed to accommodate students who work during the day,” Moss said. “This is a great opportunity for those people who are employed but want to either enhance the skills they already have or gain skills to start a new career. At the same time, we are an affordable option, with tuition that is about half of what you would find at a private cosmetology school.”

VGCC offers diploma and certificate programs in Cosmetology, Cosmetology Instructor, and Manicuring/Nail Technology . These curriculum programs provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. Students develop their skills in a simulated salon environment. According to Moss, serving a large, diverse clientele in the salons and learning under experienced instructors have helped VGCC students meet their licensure requirements and pass their exams administered by the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners. In the most recent report released by the N.C. Community College System, VGCC students had a 93% passing rate on the state Cosmetology exam and a 100% passing rate on the Cosmetic Arts Apprentice exam.

Emily A. Ankrom, a VGCC graduate, will be the instructor for the evening classes at South Campus.

New students can apply for admission now, online or on any VGCC campus. Orientation and advising of new students will take place throughout the summer. Registration for fall classes is currently ongoing and will end on Aug. 14. For more information, contact Tomeka Moss at (252) 738-3357 or visit South Campus .
