VGCC offers class on Decorating Cakes with Fondant

A class being offered for the first time at Vance-Granville Community College will teach area residents how to take their cakes to another level.

Cake Decorating: Fondant” is scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6 until 8 p.m., Sept. 10 through Oct. 15. The classes will meet in room 5227 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County.

Amy Purvis of Franklinton is the instructor for this hands-on course. “Fondant is somewhat like clay, but it’s made of sugar,” Purvis explained. “In this class, we’re going to learn how to cover a cake and decorate it with fondant, including using it to mold shapes like flowers.” No prior experience is required. Purvis, who has been decorating cakes for 30 years, has previously taught cake decorating classes at VGCC using traditional butter cream icing. Recently, however, students asked for a class on fondant, which can be challenging but is increasingly popular.

The total cost per person, including all fees, is $51.

Registration in advance is required. For more information, contact Theresa Somerville at (252) 738-3427 or SomervilleT@vgcc.edu .
