VGCC offers Administrative Assistant program in one semester

Area residents will have a new opportunity to gain a credential for jobs in office administration when the fall semester begins at Vance-Granville Community College on Aug. 17.

The college is scheduling courses in a uniquely accelerated fashion that allows students to complete the entire 17-credit-hour Administrative Assistant certificate in just one semester, all at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg.

Six courses are required for the certificate. On this accelerated schedule, students will take three courses during the first eight weeks of the fall semester (August-October): Introduction to Computers ( CIS 110 ), Keyboarding ( OST 131 ) and Word Processing ( OST 136 ). Then, in the second eight weeks (October-December), students will take Text Entry & Formatting ( OST 134 ), Advanced Software Application ( OST 138 ) and Text Editing Applications ( OST 164 ).

Administrative assistants work in a variety of fields and primarily provide support to professional staff. Those seeking positions as an Administrative Assistant should possess strong skills in keyboarding, document production, calendar management and email; proficiency with office equipment and computers; and strong oral and written communication skills.

Once students complete the Administrative Assistant certificate, they can also apply those credits to the Associate in Applied Science degree in Office Administration .

Orientation , advising and registration for fall are currently ongoing. Financial aid for this certificate program is available to those who qualify.
