VGCC names six Early College students to Dean’s List

Vance-Granville Community College recently announced that six students who are enrolled in Early College High School programs earned Dean’s List honors for the fall semester that ended in December 2011. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student had to maintain a 3.5 grade-point average and have no grade lower than “B” while carrying at least 12 semester hours. At early college high schools, students simultaneously complete both a high school diploma and a two-year college degree (or up to two years of college-transferable credit) over a five-year period, tuition-free.

Two students from Franklin County Early College High School , Kimberly Allen and Akira Romero, both of Louisburg, made the Dean’s List. The same honor went to Elizabeth Martine of Stem and Casey Nordcliff of Creedmoor, both students at Granville Early College High School . Vance County Early College High School had two students to qualify for the Dean’s List: Dyvoniek Burwell and Jennie Robinson, both of Henderson.

“Since VGCC first started partnering with local school systems on early college high schools in 2008, the students at these innovative schools have impressed both their high school and college instructors with their enthusiasm and their dedication to academic excellence,” said VGCC Vice President of Instruction Dr. Angela Ballentine. “As these schools continue to make excellent progress, their students have become part of the larger VGCC family. For their outstanding work in their rigorous college-level courses — in which they typically learn side-by-side with adults — six students have taken their rightful place among all the other VGCC students on the latest Dean’s List.”

As part of North Carolina’s “ Career & College Promise ” program, VGCC operates four early college high schools through cooperative partnerships with local public schools. Vance County Early College High School, housed at VGCC’s Main Campus, and Warren Early College High School, based at the Warren County Campus in Warrenton, were established in 2008 in collaboration with the Vance County Schools and Warren County Schools, respectively. Granville Early College High School, a partnership with Granville County Schools, opened in 2009 and moved into its permanent facility across the street from VGCC’s South Campus in Creedmoor in 2011. In Jan. 2010, Franklin County Schools and VGCC opened Franklin County Early College High School at the college’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg. The four high schools have approximately 600 students enrolled during the 2011-2012 year. When fully enrolled several years from now, the four will serve between 800 and 1,000 students.
