VGCC names new Women’s Volleyball Coach

Christopher Young of Youngsville has been named the head coach for the women’s volleyball team at Vance-Granville Community College.

A native of Croswell, Michigan, Young (pictured above) attended Croswell-Lexington High School, where he played golf, baseball, ice hockey, and track and field at the varsity level. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education at Central Michigan University, majoring in physical education, and a Master’s in Educational Leadership and Administration at Union Institute and University in Ohio.

Young has played volleyball recreationally since he was 18 years old, and has coached volleyball for the past ten years. He was the head coach for girls’ volleyball and for other sports at Crystal Lake Middle School in Pompano Beach, Florida, where he was also a teacher and assistant athletic director. While in Florida, Young also served as program director for a local YMCA. He moved to Jacksonville, N.C., in 2010 and became a teacher and athletic director at Jacksonville Commons Middle School. Again, he served as the school’s head coach for girls’ volleyball and for other sports.

Young brings to the VGCC program a philosophy of “sticking to the basics” and instilling core values in players. “I expect honesty, hard work and teamwork,” Young said. “I make sure my athletes focus on academics before athletics. I am looking forward to working with our Vanguards student-athletes and giving them the skills to be successful in school, in athletics, and in life.”
