VGCC names new Pharmacy Technology program head

Dr. Erica Fleming of Creedmoor was recently named program head for the Pharmacy Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College.

Born in England and raised on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, Fleming started her career performing pharmacy technician and patient education duties at a hospital and a retail pharmacy. She came to the United States to attend the Howard University College of Pharmacy in Washington, D.C. Fleming graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree in 2003, completed a post-doctoral fellowship and worked as a pharmacist in Washington before moving to North Carolina. She has served as the lead pharmacist at pharmacies in Henderson, Oxford and Creedmoor. Locally, Fleming has organized Community Immunization Clinics and partnered with the Creedmoor Police Department for drug take-back and medication safety awareness initiatives, while she has also been involved with church medical ministries.

Fleming is a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the Howard University Pharmacy Alumni Association, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and Kappa Epsilon Pharmacy Fraternity.

“Dr. Fleming brings to VGCC more than 10 years of Pharmacy experience,” said Angela Thomas, Dean of Health Sciences for Vance-Granville. “Her diverse background and expertise will help advance the Pharmacy Technology Program to higher levels, while assisting our students with exploring career opportunities in numerous areas of pharmacy.”

VGCC offers both an associate degree and a one-year (three-semester) diploma program in Pharmacy Technology. VGCC’s Pharmacy Technology graduates have found employment not only in retail drug stores but also in hospitals, infusion centers, long-term care facilities, wholesale drug companies, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and pharmacy benefit management call centers. Graduates are prepared to take the National Certification Examination developed by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
