VGCC Mini-Semester Classes Offer Jump-Start To College

Registration is under way at Vance-Granville Community College for nine mini-semester classes, which will begin Monday, Feb. 18.

Mini-semester classes are ones that are held three hours a day, twice a week for eight weeks in order to get in the same number of instruction hours for the same credits as a full semester course. Most of the mini-semester classes are first-semester, required classes that may be hard to get into for the full semester, according to Marsha Nelson, VGCC dean of Curriculum.

“The record enrollment we experienced during Spring Semesters caused many of the key classes to fill up quickly so that some students were not able to get in,” Nelson said. “By offering them in the mini-semester, more students are able to take these important classes and get a jump-start on their college credits.”

Mini-semester classes will be offered at all four of Vance-Granville’s classes. Nelson pointed out that Introductory Algebra, which will be offered at the main campus in Vance County, at South Campus in Granville County and at the Franklin County Campus is required for many of the college’s programs. Also, Basic PC Literacy and Keyboarding are required in several VGCC programs.

“Offering mini-semester classes on all four campuses, along with Saturday classes we have added, gives our students alternatives and more flexibility in formulating their schedules,” Nelson added.

Basic PC Literacy, Community Policing (a Criminal Justice requirement), Introductory Algebra and Keyboarding are mini-semester classes to be offered at the main campus. South Campus will hold Survey of Economics and Introductory Algebra classes, Warren County Campus will offer Basic PC Literacy, and Franklin County Campus will offer Introduction to Business and Introductory Algebra in the concentrated format.

Registration for mini-semester classes will be held through Friday, Feb. 15. Currently enrolled students should make an appointment with their advisors to register. New students should call the Student Services office at the main campus at 492-2061 or the satellite campus at which the class they are interested in is being offered for more information and to be assigned an advisor.
