VGCC meets all State Performance Measures in annual report

Vance-Granville Community College met or exceeded all eight of the North Carolina Community College Performance Measures for 2008-09, according to the 2010 Critical Success Factors report from the N.C. Community College System office, released July 1. VGCC President Randy Parker discussed the report at the July 19 meeting of the college’s board of trustees. For the second consecutive year, VGCC scores equaled or surpassed each of the required standards, making the college one of 24 in the state to do so this year.

“The data contained in this report card demonstrate that our outstanding faculty and staff are continuing the VGCC tradition of excellence serving students and businesses in our four-county area,” VGCC President Randy Parker said. “Our students are also rising to the challenge as they receive the high-quality education and training they need to prepare for new careers in today’s global economy.”

For more than 20 years, the N.C. Community College System has annually compiled an assessment of its 58 colleges based on a variety of indicators related to service, student success and performance during the previous academic year. This annual reporting is part of the strict accountability requirements of the North Carolina General Assembly. Over time, the assessment has evolved into eight core standards, or performances measures, including the progress of Basic Skills students; passing rates on licensure/certification exams for first-time test takers; performance of College Transfer students; passing rates in developmental courses; success rate of developmental students in subsequent college-level courses; student satisfaction; curriculum student retention, graduation and transfer rate; and client satisfaction with customized training.

The report showed that 98 % of VGCC students said they were satisfied with their education. Of those who completed their program of study, 100 % were satisfied. Meanwhile, 93 % of businesses served by VGCC reported that they were satisfied with the customized training the college provided. Also, 89 % of VGCC College Transfer students had a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher at a UNC institution after two semesters at the university. That was an improvement over VGCC’s performance on that measure from the previous year. Students transferring to a four-year state university from Vance-Granville continue to out-perform students who started at the public universities as freshmen.
