VGCC Logistics educator appointed to new statewide council

Walter E. Martin, the Director of Logistics Technology at Vance-Granville Community College, has been elected as one of the leaders of the new North Carolina Warehousing Education and Research Council.

The council is a group of warehousing and distribution professionals from across the state. Martin (pictured above) is the only full-time educator chosen as a director-at-large for the council. Martin is also the Director of the North Carolina Consortium for Logistics Education (NCCLE), which includes VGCC, Wake Technical Community College and the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill. The consortium offers a two-year associate degree in Global Logistics Technology , as well as certificates and short-term training.

“This new council is a great addition to the mix of professional logistics organizations for North Carolina and presents an opportunity for NCCLE to promote our educational programs to our warehousing and distribution industry,” Martin said. “As the educator on board, part of my focus will be to ensure our programs are equipping students with the right skill sets for the industry and to create internship opportunities for logistics students.”

Prior to joining VGCC and forming the consortium in 2009, Martin was the director of the Global Logistics Technology program at Lenoir Community College. In 2000, he developed the Global Logistics Technology curriculum for the North Carolina Community College System in collaboration with Dr. Noel Greis, Director of the Center for Logistics and Global Strategy at the Kenan Institute. Martin is a graduate of St. Leo College and of TUI University, where he earned an MBA with a Logistics Concentration. Prior to entering the field of education, he served with the United States Air Force for 25 years. Martin retired as a Chief Master Sergeant and served in various logistics management positions worldwide. He holds degrees in Management Information Systems, Human Resources, Data Processing, and Logistics, as well as advanced certification in logistics from Georgia Tech and the International Business Training Institute.

Local and regional groups such as the North Carolina Warehousing Education and Research Council have been established across the country by the national Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC), the only professional organization focused on warehouse management and its role in the supply chain. WERC is a not-for-profit organization, the members of which are professionals who lead, direct and manage the efficient flow of information, materials and finished goods throughout the supply chain. Members come from various backgrounds and represent a variety of distribution interests.
