VGCC golfer places sixth at Regional Championship

A Vance-Granville Community College student had a strong showing at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X Championship Golf tournament, which was held on April 24-26 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh.

Derek Jones of Henderson (pictured above), a student in the Associate in Arts (College Transfer) program at VGCC, shot a 176 to place sixth in the 36-hole tournament. The team from Johnston Community College won the championship. With its victory, Johnston CC earned the right to represent Region X at the Division II national tournament for the second consecutive year. Other colleges participating at the tournament in Raleigh included Louisburg College, Surry Community College, Sandhills Community College and Craven Community College.

The regional tournament marked the end of the VGCC golf program’s third season, and the second for the team at the NJCAA level. Anyone interested in joining the VGCC Vanguards golf team, which is open to both men and women, should contact Coach Jim Schwab at (919) 475-1542.
