VGCC Golf Tournament raises Thousands for Scholarships

Vance-Granville Community College’s 27th annual Endowment Fund Benefit Golf Tournament generated approximately $23,000 from entry fees and from sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students at the college. A total of 122 players formed 31 teams to play in either the morning or the afternoon round on Tuesday, May 10 at Henderson Country Club.

 

“We are grateful for the response to the tournament from golfers and business sponsors, which is reflective of the community’s strong support for our college,” said VGCC President Randy Parker. “Over the years, our golf tournaments have raised a total of more than $400,000, helping numerous students to achieve their educational goals.”

 

In the morning round, the team of Donald C. Seifert, Sr., Buddy Thomas, John Norwood and James Beck took home the first-place trophy. Second place in the morning round went to the team of Bobbie Jo May, Ken Lewis and Rusty Pace, while the team of Brad Johnson, David Pace and Randy Owen placed third.

 

In the afternoon round, the CenturyLink team, including Randy Gilmore, Billy Davidson, Chris Joyner and Steve Launder, finished in first place. The Vulcan Materials team of Michael Carter, Charlie Guerrant, Wayne Banty, and Lynn Hendricks came in second. Third place in the afternoon went to the team of James Edwards, George Watkins, Chick Young and Danny Wright.

 

Steve Wright took the longest-drive prize in the morning round, while Cecil Greene had the longest drive in the afternoon. John Norwood won the closest to the pin prize on Hole No. 9 in the morning, and Dr. Michael Mahan took that honor in the afternoon round. Fred Owen was the winner of the 50/50 Putting Contest. He won half of the accumulated $5 entry fees for that contest.

 

At the dinner held to round out the day, students Gary W. Barker of Chapel Hill, Carissa Santos Aguas of Henderson and Jon M. Baumgardner of Oxford, who have each received endowed VGCC scholarships, expressed thanks to those who participated in the tournament. Players also took home an assortment of door prizes.

 

President Parker expressed his appreciation to the companies and individuals who supported the VGCC tournament as sponsors. AXA Financial Advisors was a corporate sponsor.
