VGCC Golf Tournament Raises $28,000-Plus For Scholarship Fund

For the second consecutive year, 200 golfers – 21 teams in the morning and 29 in the afternoon – drove, chipped and putted their way around Henderson Country Club in the 19th annual Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament.

At the end of the morning and afternoon rounds on May 20, some great scores were posted and  more than $28,000 was raised to fund scholarships for deserving students at the college.

“Despite difficulties in the economy and recent wet weather, Vance-Granville’s supporters again turned out in force to support our tournament,” said VGCC President Robert A. Miller. “This is further testimony of the belief that people in our service area have in the college’s efforts to educate and train our people.”

Scores turned in by the golfers were really sensational, and both winning teams were from Creedmoor. In the morning round, the team of Tony Emery, Richard Lyon, Phil Shope and Fred Adams fired a team score of 57, 15 under par, to take the first-place trophy.

The Ellington-Brim Chevrolet team of Benny Bennett, Onnie Gore, Steve Wright and Ronnie Ellington took the afternoon championship with a blistering 54.

Second place in the morning went to the team of Jesse A. Sullins Jr., Jon Waterman, Chip Newman and Bob Sasser, who turned in a net 58. The Kittrell Job Corps Center team of Tim Wilkerson, Willie McLaughlin, Harry Anderson and Gary Morgan took third with a net 60.

In the afternoon, the Progress Energy team of Marshall Thompson, Phil Pleasants, Bobby Crocker and Eric Clay who posted a net 58 and took second place by matching cards over the S.T. Wooten team, which also had a net 58. Representing Wooten were M.A. Tyson, Bobby Wilkerson, Hank Butts and Reade Dawson.

Hitting the long drive in the morning on hole number 1 was Joe Crute, while Gerald Fuller took the closest-to-the-pin prize on hole 9. Long driver in the afternoon was Benny Bennett, and Dale Pernell had the closest to the pin.

President Miller also thanked numerous companies who supported the tournament as sponsors. Platinum sponsors for the VGCC Endowment Fund Golf Tournament were Alaris Medical Systems and Solectron of Creedmoor, Bank of America, Mast Drugs, Progress Energy and Sprint of Henderson, Classic Foods/Coca-Cola of Henderson and Durham, Learning Environments of Liberty, and Novozymes North America of Franklinton.

Gold sponsors were The Athlete’s Foot, Boyd Chevrolet-Buick/Charles Pontiac-Cadillac, Olds-GMC-Isuzu, Century 21 Country Knolls Realty, Corporate Express and Southern Caterers of Henderson, Boyd Olds-Pontiac-Buick-GMC-Honda-Ford and Brooks Appraisal of Oxford, Bordeaux Construction Co. of Durham, Commercial Equipment Inc. of Raleigh, Dove, Knight & Whitehurst of Rocky Mount, and Eon Pharma of Wilson.

Classic Foods provided lunch and dinner for the golfers, and Southern Caterers cooked breakfast at the course. Miller also thanked companies who provided items for door prizes and for the golfers’ gift bags, including Americal, Peanut Roaster, PSNC Energy, Revlon, Sprint, Georgia-Pacific, Lace Lastics, MBS Textbook Exchange, Middleburg Steakhouse, O’Henry, Vance Furniture Co. and the VGCC Bookstore.


VGCC MORNING CHAMPS– Taking first place in the morning round of the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament was the team of, left to right, Richard Lyon, Tony Emery, Fred Adams and Phil Shope. The Creedmoor team shot 15 under par 57 to take the trophy.  

2nd IN MORNING– Runners-up in the morning round of the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament was the team of, left to right, Chip Newman, Jon Waterman, Bob Sasser and Jesse A. Sullins Jr., who shot a net 58.

3rd IN MORNING – Taking third place in the morning round of the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament was the team representing Kittrell Job Corps Center of, left to right, Harry Anderson, Willie McLaughlin, Tim Wilkerson and Gary Morgan. Their net score of 60 took the prize.

TOPS IN AFTERNOON– Taking first place in the afternoon round of the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament was the Ellington-Brim Chevrolet team of, left to right, Ronnie Ellington, Benny Bennett, Onnie Gore and Steve Wright. The Creedmoor team shot a blistering 54, 18 under par, to take the trophy.

SECOND IN P.M.– Taking second place in the afternoon round of the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament was the Progress Energy team of, left to right, Phil Pleasants, Bobby Crocker, Marshall Thompson and Eric Clay. The team shot a net 58 to claim the runner-up trophies.

 

3RD IN AFTERNOON– The S.T. Wooten team shot a net 58 to take third place in the afternoon round of the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament. Teaming up to take the trophies were, from left: Hank Butts, Reade Dawson, Bobby Wilkerson and M.A. Tyson.
