VGCC Golf Tournament Raises $23,000 for Scholarships

Vance-Granville Community College’s 24th annual Endowment Fund Benefit Golf Tournament generated $23,000 from entry fees and from sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students at the college. A total of 131 players on 33 teams played in either the morning or the afternoon round on Tuesday, May 13 at Henderson Country Club.

“We appreciated the response to the tournament from golfers and business sponsors, which is reflective of the community’s strong support for our college,” said VGCC President Randy Parker. “The money raised by this tournament will mean the difference in many of our students being able to achieve their educational goals and prepare themselves for the future.”

In the morning round, the team of Gerald Fuller, Rusty Pace, Bobbie Jo May and Scott May took home the first-place trophy. Second place in the morning round went to the team of Donald Seifert, Sr., John Norwood, Buddy Thomas and Buddy Finch, while Phil Shope, Johnnie Haithcock, Rick Royals and Tommy Overcash placed third.

In the afternoon round, the Variety Wholesalers team, Ken Ramsey, Tom Perkins, Pete Pegram and Fred Keith, finished in first place. The Coca-Cola team, consisting of Kenneth Abbott, Joe Curtis, Barbara Wilson and Mike Faulkner, came in second. Third place in the afternoon went to Dr. Tom Houlihan, Ernie Houle, Fred Owen and Tom Williams.

Bob Hubbard, Jr. took the long-drive prize in the morning round, while Joe Curtis had the longest drive in the afternoon. Doug Byrom won the closest to the pin prize on Hole No. 9 in the morning, and Heath Davis took that honor in the afternoon round.

At the dinner held to round out the day, students Gabrielle Julius and Adrian Davis, who have received endowed VGCC scholarships, expressed thanks to those who participated in the tournament. Players took home door prizes, and Roxanne Fleming of Henderson won a raffle for a framed Bob Timberlake print, which will be personally autographed by the artist.

President Parker expressed his appreciation to the companies who supported the VGCC tournament as sponsors. AXA Financial Advisors was a corporate sponsor. Platinum sponsors for the tournament were Charles Boyd, Inc., HTG Parker of Creedmoor, Variety Wholesalers of Henderson, Vulcan Materials of Henderson and RBC Bank of Henderson. Gold sponsors for the tournament were The Athlete’s Foot of Henderson, Carolina Sunrock, LLC of Butner, Maria Parham Medical Center of Henderson, Granville Health System of Oxford, and Supply Line Country Market of Henderson. Brooks Appraisals, Inc. of Oxford, Pierce Group Benefits, LLC of Holly Springs, and Union Bank & Trust Company of Henderson were Silver sponsors.

Interest earned on the Endowment Fund has provided more than 5,000 scholarships to VGCC students since 1982. Scholarships have been established by industries, businesses, individuals, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff. In Fall 2007, Vance-Granville awarded scholarships to a record 317 full-time students.
