VGCC Golf team plays first tournaments of season

In its first action of the 2010 season, the Vance-Granville Community College men’s golf team played in two tournaments hosted by Johnston Community College.

On March 11, the VGCC squad placed third in the Pine Hollow Invitational, held at the Pine Hollow Golf Club in Clayton. The Vanguards posted a team score of 350, behind champion Sandhills Community College, with 298, and runners-up Johnston CC, with 331. Central Carolina Community College placed fourth, with 377. Team scores are the cumulative total of the four best scores from among the team’s participating players. With a score of 81, Tyler Woodside was VGCC’s best golfer for the day. The other members of the team playing included Daniel Schmoyer, Tommy Overcash, Chris Dove, Michael Reese and Joshua Lorenzo.

The following day, March 12, the Vanguards competed with the three colleges from the previous tournament, plus Wake Technical Community College, in the Johnston County Invitational at Smithfield Country Club. Wake Tech came away with a team victory, scoring 313. VGCC ended the day with a score of 345, for fourth place. Again, Woodside posted the best score among the Vanguards, with an 80. Others participating for VGCC included Schmoyer, Overcash, Reese, Dove and Jeremy Radford.

The 2010 season is the Vanguards’ second season, and the first at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) level, having played as a club sport in 2009.
