VGCC Franklin Campus Day Care Raises Funds for Children’s Hospital

Young students at the Child Care Center at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus recently participated in a nationwide fundraiser for Tennessee-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The children’s families raised $250 for the St. Jude “ Trike-a-Thon ,” which is designed to teach pre-schoolers to use riding toys safely while also raising money for the hospital. All funds raised support St. Jude’s efforts in eradicating childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance, and no child is denied treatment because of their family’s inability to pay. The hospital sent early childhood education centers like the facility at VGCC Franklin Campus a package of books, coloring books, and a DVD to teach children about the purpose of the Trike-a-Thon.

Pictured above, left, the children concluded the event by riding their tricycles between the buildings at the Franklin Campus for an hour and a half on May 6, according to child day care center manager Michelle Patterson.

Four-year-old Chelsea Phinney (pictured, above, right, in pink coat) was recognized for raising the most money, with $145, surpassing her goal of $100. She is the daughter of VGCC student Michele Phinney of Louisburg.
