VGCC Faculty and Staff Learn about Safety

A December workshop for Vance-Granville Community College faculty and staff focused on having a safe, happy holiday season by defending oneself against crime. Henderson Police Department Lt. Irvin Robinson, assisted by Angela Feingold, offered tips for personal and home security. Robinson said that using common sense and being aware of your surroundings are the best crime prevention techniques. “Remember, your safety is your responsibility,” Robinson said.

Other tips included being cautious at ATMs, where would-be thieves can either approach a person or watch them typing in their personal identification network, and around vehicles. To secure one’s home while away, Robinson suggested timers that turn on lights or radios at regular intervals. Safe homes, he said, also should have steel or solid-wood exterior doors with hinges that are inside the house. The lieutenant also advised that anyone who purchases a personal-safety device like pepper spray and mace should be properly trained to use it.

Meanwhile, VGCC will offer a self-defense class from Jan. 22 through March 25 on Tuesdays from 8-9 p.m. The10-hour course is taught by Steve Gupton at the Crossroad Karate Studio. The cost of the class is $58.75. Individuals interested in enrolling in the class should contact Donna Dodson at (252) 738-3316.
