VGCC Defeats Bonner Academy in Fifth Basketball Win

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team extended its streak to 5-0 on Saturday, Dec. 1 with an exciting 114-106 home win over Bonner Academy. VGCC head coach Avery Wilson said that the Raleigh prep school squad was likely “the best team we’ve faced so far.”

Down 54-44 at halftime, the VGCC Vanguards roared back in the second half with an improved defensive effort while putting up 70 points on offense. Jayson Brown of Raleigh led the Vanguards with 28 points. Wilson said that his team’s balance was demonstrated by four other players scoring in double figures: Michael Wright of Oxford with 24, and Henderson residents E.J. Henderson with 20, Jeremy Lenoir with 15 and Gianni Jefferson with 14.

Wilson will now try to prepare the VGCC team for its next game, versus the Davidson County Community College Storm on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at Western Vance High School in Henderson. The game is sure to be intense, since VGCC and DCCC have faced off before, in a thrilling scrimmage on Oct. 18. The result of that match-up was a 105-103 loss for the Vanguards in overtime. VGCC Student Activities coordinator Peyton Boyd is advertising the Dec. 12 game as “Pack the Stands” night, hoping that a large show of support will help the team remain unbeaten in regular-season play. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
