VGCC course helps area residents get the most from Social Networks

Social networking web sites such as Facebook have exploded in popularity in recent years, changing the way we communicate and do business. Now, a new course offered by the Computer Center at Vance-Granville Community College will help area residents to use these tools effectively. The course, “Social Networks,” is scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6 until 10 p.m., June 9 through July 21, on the college’s main campus in Vance County.

Instructor Michael Bacon will navigate students through the basics of using social networking for business or pleasure, focusing on Facebook , Twitter , Skype, and LinkedIn. Students will learn how to create profiles for themselves and their businesses on Facebook, which boasts over 600 million active users; how Twitter is used to send and read messages (“tweets”) up to 140 characters in length, which are displayed on the user’s profile page; how to use Skype to make free voice calls and participate in chats over the Internet; and how to enhance their professional profiles through LinkedIn, a business-oriented social networking site.

The registration fee for this course is $65, with other college fees totaling $6. For one course per semester, registration fees are waived for N.C. resident seniors, ages 65 and above.

For more information and to register, call (252) 738-3417. Prospective students are asked to register by June 1.
