VGCC Cosmetology Students test skills in Competition

The annual Vance-Granville Community College Cosmetology competition was held on April 2 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. This year, student stylists picked one of two categories in which to demonstrate their skills and creative flair: “Fantasy,” and “Elegant Updo,” in which students worked on the heads of mannequins, rather than on live models.

 

In the Fantasy category, the first-place winner was Jas Gill, a student at VGCC’s Main Campus . Trophies for second, third and fourth places went to Crystal Eatmon, also of Main Campus, Gwendolyn Holmes of Franklin County Campus and Ashley Buhls of Main Campus.

 

Myra Wicker of South Campus (Granville County) placed first in the Elegant Updo category. Two of her fellow South Campus students, Shanequa Pressley and Janet Ellis, placed second and third, respectively. Placing fourth was Cassandra Brown of Franklin County Campus.

 

The winners received trophies and hair styling products and implements as prizes. Judges for the competition were two area professionals, Mashawn Royster of Smart Styles of Oxford and Ratisha Winston of Smart Styles of Henderson. Winston is a VGCC Cosmetology program graduate.
