VGCC Computer Class Helps Educators

While they are on summer break, area teachers and teacher assistants can take advantage of an upcoming Vance-Granville Community College course specifically designed to help them use computers with their students. “The Computerized Classroom for Teachers & Assistants” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., July 8 through Aug. 7 on the college’s main campus in Vance County.

VGCC Office Systems Technology instructor Amy O’Geary will teach the course, which will focus on how educators can use the latest versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The 2007 versions of each piece of software contain a number of new features and an entirely new graphical user interface.

“In Word, we will go over word processing basics and more advanced topics such as tables, columns, graphics, and mail merge,” O’Geary said. “PowerPoint will cover the basics of designing a presentation along with adding animation and sound. In Excel, I will demonstrate how to use the spreadsheet and use functions and calculations in order to develop an efficient grade book.”

The cost of the course is $63.
